As I detailed earlier in Hunka Chunky Burning Love, Diver likes his hair cut short, Quantico-style. And now that he is in the Civil Air Patrol Cadets, Quantico is more than a style. It's "regulation", he explains."But Diver, I love your hair. You have great hair!" I protest.
"Mom," he barks, "Suck up and deal."
.......................... ............. ........... (That's the sound of Anonymom, sucking up and dealing.)
Yesterday, when another substitute bus driver showed up in yet another vehicle to take him to school, Diver poked his head in the door and alerted me, "Mom, it's another sub!"
"Suck up and deal," I replied.
........................... ............ ....... (That's the sound of Diver realizing the trap he himself has set. And sucking up and dealing with it.)
Hooray!
We lived on base in Quantico for two years, and all the menfolk -- dads and sons alike -- all got those haircuts every Sunday. Its a Marine tradition. Now my boys both grow their hair out, especially Ben Ten who likes the long hair of a surfer. And I sort of admit I wish somedays for our Quantico style as it required very little maintenance.
ReplyDeleteMy husband taught me how to ask for the style we wanted to the kids in Marine parlance for when he wasn't around -- "medium reg, no skin". To this day, I have no idea what that means but every time I said it to a Marine barber, I got the same result ;)
Love this. I did the same thing with Nigel when I told him to do a chore that he didn't want to do and he said, "It's not my bag." So next time he asked me to do something for him I said that back to him. He's never said it again.
ReplyDeleteMy modem has been making it very difficult to blogread, so I'm really happy that I was able to read yours today! I too hate it when my son, Taz, wants to shave off his beautiful curls. I think it makes him look like a Skinhead. Gaaaah! My solution so far has been to keep forgetting to get a haircut appointment,.
ReplyDeleteGrowing us as a military brat and then marrying an Army dude, I've always liked the "regulation haircut."
ReplyDeleteGlad you and Diver were both able to cuck up and deal! 8)
Hey! Just found your blog, thought I'd comment (I found you through MamaMara's blogroll). My kids (13 and 9) just joined the Young Marines (DH is Navy, I'm Air Force, so Sea Cadets and Civil Air Patrol were options, but they chose the Young Marines, and that's okay with me), and they are religious about getting their high-and-tight haircuts at the base barbershop each week. Good on your son for joining the CAP - and he looks great with his regulation haircut. :) (Okay, back to lurking)...
