Awful. Discouraging. I wasn't able to find the whole article, but what it says in that second paragraph makes me wonder about his homelife. And that's where love and kindness starts. If it's not evident at home, it won't be visible in the rest of the world.
My first thought was, if that boy had gotten lost here in the Midwest, he wouldn't think that way.
