  1. My first thought was, if that boy had gotten lost here in the Midwest, he wouldn't think that way.

    Then I think of my son, Rocky, who has spent his life here cultivating his own misanthropy, the cruel remarks of his peers serving as the fertilizer.

    How do we show our kids that there is love and kindness and beauty in the world?

  2. Awful. Discouraging. I wasn't able to find the whole article, but what it says in that second paragraph makes me wonder about his homelife. And that's where love and kindness starts. If it's not evident at home, it won't be visible in the rest of the world.
